Metal Roofing and Insulation

I have several all-metal storage buildings. The buildings are not insulated. I am aware that several metal buildings are put up and have a vinyl faced insulation just under the metal roofing. I am considering adding insulation to reduce the temperature and potential sweating but wanted some advice:

1.) will adding insulation significantly reduce temperature
2.) will it reduce the potential for sweating
3.) if it is worthwhile, what is the best method of adding insulation

Thanks,
Bob

Metal Roofing and Insulation

Hi Bob

Have you explored the possiblity of over coating the roof of these premises with a reflective system. This can reduce the heat which is aborbed into the premises and be much more cost effective than insulating.

What type of roofs are they?

Get a quote on sprayed urathane foam insulation. That would solve the problem but might be a tad expensive.

Thanks for the response.

The roof is metal with lap joints. A reflective coating may be easier to apply than insulation. The buildings are approximately 3 1/2 years old so I am not concerned about a coating for a sealant at this time but will likely need in the future.

Coatings will need to be redone ever 5-10 years, if the metal buildings are white heck even most metal panels now are reflective and putting a coating on it will do no good. You could put insulation under the panels between the perlins and use a batten strip to hold the insulation in place, or you could insulate it from the top. depending on the style of roof you could add fill insulation between the "valleys" or if its the coragated style a hard densdeck first. Then 1.5 or more of Iso and a PVC or TPO roof. That would be insulated and reflective. PolyIso insulation has an R value of 6 per inch. Spray foam roofing would be cheaper but will cause more problems in the end. Once the water gets in it stays there and will rust out your roofing panels.

Sure wish that I had installed the insulation during construction. I got some bad advice from a builder that I thought was helping me.

Thanks for the information. Looks like my best bet is going to be to install batts between the perlins. That will allow me to work on as I have time and the money.

Thanks again for the responses.
