Leveling a sloped roof -- making a deck
Okay, here's the deal. I'm moving into an apartment that has a door that leads out onto the sloped roof of the first floor. It's intended to be used as a patio, which is great, but the roof is sloped a bit too much to be able to feel safe. So I want to level it out, and can't seem to find any information on what to do. I don't think I can nail into the roof, as it looks like a tarrish membrane that is most likely waterproof. On either side of the roof is a fire escape, would it be possible to anchor into that?

I see no one has responded to your question, so I will. First thing for you to do is get permission from your landlord to do this project. If you penatrate the membrane seal and it doesn't seal up you could cause water damage to the living quarters as well as to the structures framing. I would ask the landlord how they would want it done, if they want it done at all. It looks from your picture that a deck could be done without hurting the membrane roof.
Gary, thanks for the response. I have Alam (my bldg owner)'s permission, and he's willing to share the cost with me as well. He would prefer that I not drill into the roof at all, which I tend to agree with, I'd hate for him to end up with leaks due to me.
I just can't think of any other way to anchor it. But I have some local union carpenter friends of mine coming over this weekend to look at it and see if we can't figure something out.
I have seen patio blocks used over membrane, but that was a flat roof, think your best bet was your idea of anchoring to the two side rails.
