Joining Metal Roof to Asphalt

Hi All,

Purchased an old farm home with 3 foot wide roll down asphalt on the shallow pitch porch roof. The main pitch is 9/12. I have shingled many asphalt roofs but the metal thing is new to me.

The little lady would like to have a red metal roof. I'd like to do sections at a time as the 3 tabs on the main pitch are in good shape for now.

Can anyone explain if this can be done (starting with the porch), type/brand metal roof in the northeast, tools ect.. needed to install metal? The underlayment is pretty darn solid. I plan on stripping the roof. One guy told me to insulate the roof with rigid insulation.......

Just unsure

Thanks in advance for the help

If your thinking of an exposed fastener panel, don't waste your money. It's made for barns and should be left to them. Certain metal systems can be diy, perhaps a metal shingle roof on a simple building. Which system were you planning on using?

Exactly what pitch is the "shallow pitch"?

Metal shingle type products, none that i know of infact, are allowed on low pitch. Knowing the pitch is going to dictate your product...this sounds like a standing seam will be needed to me. As Pat mentioned, the exposed fastener type metal panels will be a waste of time and $.

Thanks for the input guys. It's what I was thinking. Screw down style roof. After your comments I'm thinking just plain ole asphalt again.....

The shallow pitch is maybe a 4/12....

That is actually good news, 4/12 is vertually going to allow you to select any of the metal roof options you want. Standing seam or metal shingles, both are gtg on 4/12.

I think the bigger issue will be $ and the skill set to install the product if your doing it yourself...some will require specific tools.

+1

R-Panel can be put down by most homeowners but Standing seam is a bit more advanced and does require some specialty tools as Andy mentioned.

Thanks guys!! I know nothing about which metal roof to choose. I don't want to break the bank but want a quality DIY product. Have done many asphalt shingle roofs but it seems that many homes are going to metal in my area. I do see the screw down style roofs being installed on homes here.... how if R-panel installed??
