Insulating roof

Hi all, I'm stuck here in AZ, years ago the roof of the house I'm in right now was redone, but it was never cool coated. It's a flat roof, and I don't think there's any insulation to speak off, just empty space between the ceiling and the roof. What I'm wondering is, should I put some kind of insulation over the roof and then put a cooling coat on it, or is the cool coat enough? The ceiling is warmer than, say, the brick of the house, but it's not exactly hot. Thx all

I'd say for sure put a reflective coating on it.There are alot to choose from with alot of differant advantages.
It's something you should really research alittle.I'd hate to see a guy spend good money on some box store crap when he could be using a far better suited product.
what kind of roof is it?still in good shape?what's your budget?

Insulating roof

Is the roof framing serving both as the roof framing and the ceiling framing, re is there a separation between?

Thanks for the replies :D. It hadn't occured to me that it could make that big a difference what I coated it with. I'll definately look into that. There is separation between the ceiling and the roof, about 8 inches through most of the house with 24 inches where the main hallway is (it's a small house, only about 1100 sq ft).

So, am I correct to conclude that the roof framing and ceiling framing are to separate structural components? MEaning that the roof joists do not also serve as the ceiling joists? If this is the case, you have a cold roof assembly and adding insulation on top of the roof will probably cost you more than it saves you....better to insulate to the top of the ceiling. I cool roof coating couldnt hurt, if it achieves Energy Star ratings of 70 aged reflectance AND is emmisive. This will aid in lessening radiant energy into the home converted from light energy from UV.

I'll definately cool coat then. Should I consider some sort of insulation underneath the cool coat? I've seen sheets of foam or rubber that you nail down to the top of the roof and cover in paper and tar before insulating? Is it worth bothering with?
