We are currently getting quotes for the roof to be stripped & re-shingled on our 30 year old side split.
Out of all the quotes we've gotten we've narrowed it down to one guy, but we're not sure about his theory on ice & water shield.
He says there is currently a shield of some sort in place under the existing shingles, and he can feel it. He says it's not necessary to put a new one down if there's one there which makes sense. However a different roofer said that it might be some outdated product and if it isn't ice & water shield that it should be replaced.
The guy we want to go with says that ice & water shield is overkill anyway and that if tar paper is used properly it serves the same function.
He has said if we want the ice & water shield he will install it for us, but he doesn't think it's required.
We would really love to know what some of you pros out there think! Any input would be greatly appreciated.
For the record, we're in Canada so we do get our fair share of nasty winter weather.
Thanks!
