ice dam removal

what tools & ice melt (envorinmently safe & without damaging the roof) do you use to get 3inch thick by 1ft, covering 30ft of surface?

Steam.

I use a garden hose and the cold water that comes out of it.

throw the hose so it runs above the dam, turn it on and walk away. Go and move the hose occasionally to a new area with ice remaining.

warning; everything below gets wet and freezes.

Fill pantyhose full of ice melt and lay them vertically up the dam

I like that idea. Wife is gonna be pissed 'cuz I stole her pantyhose but oh well. It won't be the first time (she was pissed, not that I took her pantyhose. I had to explain just in case you guys started thinking something weird is going on)

It's not a real fast solution but it will keep a channel open for water to flow through once it's working.
