Ice dam prevention

I am having a problem with ice dams on a small section of my roof. I plan to lay down the heating coils and am thinking that if I first put down aluminum sheets, because they conduct or absorb the heat, it will help. Any ideas what thickness I should get? Or any better ideas?

add attic insulation, flash behind the gutter, and install ice and water shield 2 ft. past bearing walls, and make sure you have proper ventilation to alleviate heat build up
Notice I ignored the heating coils, and aluminum sheets--you should also

Since the manufacturers do not recommend that those cables to be installed in an aluminum gutters, which I believe may be due to potential short-circuiting problems, it does not seem likely that your idea to utilize the sheet goods of aluminum would be a good idea.

Also, fire departments hate those things, due to potential of fire hazards if the insulation on the wires gets compromised.

Adequate Balanced Ventilation will alleviate the hot spots on the upper portions of the roof, where the quicker melting occurs and minimize the ice damming that occurs on the eaves.

A higher R-Value of attic insulation will minimize the amount of heat loss in the first place, which also would be beneficial, not only for the ice damming problems, but also the heating bills in the winter.
