I live in hurricane country and need some ventilation help. Recently built a house & need venting help in the attic. I have a metal hip roof with continous soffit vent but need a vent at top. Really don't want to install a roof/attic fan, not a big fan of cutting a hole in the roof & have winds or debris knock dome vent off. My general contractor neighbor said I could get a gable vent fan, center it towards the top of attic, & attach a simple duct to the fan & direct it out the soffit. I would get needed airflow venting out & no hole in my roof. What do you think?
I would have installed the ridge vent as part of the roofing project, unless you have a short ridge and it wouldn't be enough to vent the attic. Now your stuck with either roof dormer or gable fans as you mentioned.
What metal roof did you have installed?
You could do solar powered roof dormers but that would require a roofer. The gable mounted fans would require a electrican. Either would work, but you get more complete venting from a ridge vent.
a few variables to consider but with the info provided i would go with:
1. ridge vent ( it may be too late for this, requires a roofer)
2. solar powered roof vents (depending on the roof type, not cheap, Quiet, no increase in power bill)
3. gable mounted fans (relatively cheap, loud, highier power bill)

Metal roofs, hurricane force wind driven rain and ridge vents are a very bad combination. Asphalt shingles cause some drag on water being blown up the roof. Plus, there would not have been enough ridge for sufficient venting. Maybe it looks like a mushroom style roof vent for me??
