How to: Roof Detail

Hello, Just finished renovating my has and figured it could use one last touch to the exterior roof. I am very interested in finding out the best way to go about adding a roofing detail on the house that is seen in somewhat more traditional farmhouses. The pics below show my house and another house that has an example of what I am looking to do.

What would be the best way to tackle this project? Thanks for any help in advance.

As roofers, those are on the top of our list of things we HATE to deal with.

Those are going to be some what a pita to install,
the aluminum covering the fascia will need to be loosened,
a couple, maybe three sections of soffit removed,
siding cut back out of the way,
take measurements.

Frame the return on the ground, with out sheathing,
bring it up and fasten properly to the wall and fascia board,
install sheathing, roof "metal or shingle" and aluminum fascia covering,
than reinstall the soffit & aluminum you removed earlier.

Extending the gutter to wrap the corner is norm for my area, mechanically it will not hurt if you do not, aesthetically it will.

Your doing all that with your ladder/s setting on a sloped roof, so you'll most likely need to nail scaffolding into the lower roof 'at least toe boards' for ladder safety.

When I mentioned cutting back the existing siding, I mean cut it back neatly to the distance you are going to build the return.
The norm for those I have roofed is 6" too 12" long.
It would be better to remove the panels of siding and re-cut in after you build & install the return, but not sure if that's the best way for a DIY project.

Edited to add, the return itself will be framed with 2x6.
Head wall support, rake & eave board, one truss/stud.
The head wall support fastened into the existing wall stud/s, the eave fastened into the existing rake of main roof.
