How many Years Does It Take, To Do A Roof Job Right?

I have been told by new roofers, "That any goof, can Roof" and everytime I hear that I cringe..And get angry....Do you you roofers feel the same way?

We all know what it takes "Roof it Right, and It's Water Tight"

I've been in construction since 1970 in one way or another. Have shingled some and have worked with many roofers even to the point of having a real roofer finish a job when it was obvious that the first guy was in over his head.
I have a lot of respect for you guys who really know your trade from the plywood sheathing to flashing to proper sealants.
As with every trade it's getting harder and harder to find people who want to do the time to learn the trade and become a journeyman at it, I'ts an art form unto itself and not learned by laying a few three tab shingles, throwing a ladder on your truck and a sign on the door.
A tip of the hat to you guys good roofers are hard to find

I am not a roofer but I still must agree with the kid.

Obviously any goof can roof but that doesn't mean it is a quality job that looks like a pro did it. In most cases, unless they got real lucky, their goof roof will look like crap.

I am an electrician and we get the same type of thing all the time. Anybody can throw romex around and they would be right. Just as in roofing and there being more than just throwing shingles, there is much more to the job than throwing romex

People think if they lay a few shingles, they are a roofer.A real roofer has knowledge of all or most roofing systems including flashings.I've been roofing for 18 yrs and enjoy learning new tecniques or systems. When someone makes a comment like that to me,I tell them to show me.And of course they can't..With roofing, there is always something to learn and can only be learnt with a hand son approach.Yeah comments like that bother me,but I'm confident in my abilities and just look at where the comments are coming from...

Any Goof can do anything....but maybe not right
I've learned there is more to roofing then just putting shingles on
Not counting sheds I've only done 4 roofs....and would hope to never do another
But my front roof needs to be done........

Like any skill knowledge & experience are needed

I cringe too. But I never bother with a come-back. Why bother? The person has no clue, and won't welcome constructive criticism, much less a retort.
Grant me the serenity.......................................... ...........

I don't mind helping others here and elsewhere that want advice and seem to be able to heed it. At least 'askers' know they don't know it all. I've had the honor of meeting a few posters and even enjoyed working with them.
