How many buddles of shingles do I need for carport?

We are getting ready to redo the roof over the carport. The dimensions of the roof are 12 X 26 and it has a very slight slope. I was wondering approx. how many bundles of shingles I would need to do the roof? How much does 1 bundle normally do. The roof is almost flat. It has just enough slope to let water run off of it. Any info would be appreciated.

A bundle of shingles covers 33 1/3 sq. ft. but they are only for roof pitch of 3.5" in 12". You may want to put down a selvage roof (roll roofing).

Most commonly, there are 3 bundles to the square, (100 square feet), but there are also thicker architectural shingles that require 4 or 5 bundles per square.

You absolutely Must know the slope or pitch of your roof first prior to installing shingles on the car port. If the slope is too shallow, then you must either install Grace Ice and Water Shield under the entire surface, including the tie in to the existing house structure or shingles, or install a more appropriate flat roof material on the surface instead, or you will be asking for problems down the road continuously.

Thanks guys. I was told the slope is at least 3 in 12. Does this sound right?

If accurate, that is one of the definitions of the least and minimal pitch allowed to apply composition shingles to.

The Ice and Water Shield recommendation would still be advised.

Is the ice and water shield similiar to tar paper or felt that is laid down before the shingles. Thanks.

It is a self adhering membrane composed of a bituthane material, with a release wax paper on the under sticky side, which you peal off as you are unrolling the material in place.

Ask any roofing supply house, such as ABC, Allied, Shelter or Bradco and they will know what you are asking about. The premier brand of Ice and Water Shield material is from Grace building products.

Do not try to put it down in any wind gusts, otherwise you will wind up like a fly in fly paper.

Thanks Ed. I appreciate the info. So you lay the Ice and Water Shield right on top of the plywood and then the shingles directly on top of the Ice and Water Shield?
Thanks Again for your help.

Yes that is correct.

You can read details and specifications at this link.

http://www.na.graceconstruction.com/prodline.cfm?did=8

I would also recommend that where the low slope roof intersects with either a wall or another pitched roof, that the membrane be continued on to that transition area.

If a wall, try to tuck the membrane behind the siding and then re-install the baby tin step flashings along with the courses of shingles. If it joins to another roof slope, then the bottom 3 feet of those shingles should be removed to allow for the application of the Grace Ice and Water Shield to be adhered to that decking as well. Then re-apply the shingles back on top of the membrane.
