How to fix roof leak

I have a 2 story house with a screened in porch that has a closed in attic area and roof above it. On the roof of the porch where the roof meets the outside wall, there is a vent which appears to be letting water into the living room ceiling. my questions are ...
1. Is the vent suppose to have shingles on it?
2. Is this vent even necessary, since it is just the attic above the screened in porch?

Also, is it a flat roofing product on there now or is the rest of it shingled and how close to the other roof is it?

the house has a two story roof with a 1 story screen porch,with a shed style porch roof that buts up against the wall of the house at the 1 story level--??
you don`t need a vent there if the bottom is fully open,and going to stay that way
whether the vent has shingles over it ,or not really depends on whether or not it`s an aluminum type that installs over the last shingles-with your situation,I would just close up the vent opening

The shingle covered vent your talking about is most likely exhaust vent used to ventilate heat getting trapped in attics/crawl spaces,
if your porch is open than the venting is not needed, but if you were to enclose the porch years later it would be.
I would make sure it's installed properly and there's been no wind damage to it, but would not remove it just incase you need it in the future, it will not hurt the roof any.

he`s getting water in there,No sense in replacing it for an open porch,or any unheated structure for that matter
