House Shingle Repair after Roofing Job

We had a new roof put on the summer. When the old roof was taken off, it was so thick it left a big gap between the bottom of the house shingles and the porch roof. The contractor finally sent someone out to fix it. Here is a picture of what the area looks like now. The carpenter said this gap needs to be there because otherwise the rainwater will rot the house shingles.

My sister says the area in the gap will rot. I emailed the contractor and sent him pictures of the job his workman did and he said yes, that is the way it is supposed to be done. The flashing is inside there.

Please help.

As long as their is flashing properly installed underneath the area, The siding is installed correctly. There needs to be a gap there for the rain water. Your sister does not know what she is talking about.

I agree with AtlanticWBConst,
if done properly there will always be a gap between the roof shingles and siding and the gap doe's not seem to high/wide/large to me either.

Not sure about the flashing at the head wall tho, below the windows,
it appears to be lifted up and it should not be,
wind driven precipitation could make it's way in there.

I third that motion. WB pretty much summed it all up for you. From that picture it looks like the contractor did some decent work providing the flashing behind it is done properly.

To me, that looks like the end cap on the ridge, not fastened.

If it is, then it should be faced nailed and the nail covered with roof sealant.

It looks to me to be a darn good job.

The ridge cap looks like how I do mine with Timbertex. The hip/under cap is cut, wrapped and sealed, and the first ridge cap is designed to hang past a wee bit. Never had a problem.
