Hip Roof Venting
I have a roofing replacementing coming up, and I wanted to know if I should go with ridge vents or box vents? What would be the proper way to put ventalation on this attic? I may down the road finish off the attic as there is a ton of space up there, thought this may be an important factor.
As of now there is vented soffit. However this may need replaced because I have a squirrel problem...
I'm hoping that the pictures show up so it is easier to see.
I'm not the best on roofing, I just know this one needs replaced as it is original to the house (1930) the wood underneath it is boards on a diagonal.
The ridges of the roof have steel caping it off on the outside.
I just want to double check around before having anything done to the roof.

I think a powered roof vent would be the best for your roof .JMO

You have little or no ridge to ridge vent. Box vents or larger below ridge vents would be the best option, IMHO. Before installing a powered vent, make sure there is adequate inlet for it (soffit vents) and that the attic is air sealed.

Hip vents are cool, too, if they are PROPERLY installed.

I think they were made by Mid-America Building Products.

Hip Roof Venting
I have only installed continuous hip venting on structures that contained a cathedral/vaulted ceiling below, since each individual rafter bay needed an exhaust portal and it worked very well from post job evidence and analysis.

As far as the minimum pitch goes, the lowest pitch a proper shingle sloped roof can be is around a 2 1/2 per 12 pitch.
I used the Smart Vent on a mid-roof application as low as that 2 1/2 per 12 which has now been present for 3 winter seasons with not problems.

No, it is not common.
Ensure that the brand of Ridge/Hip Vent material manufacturer you decide to use allows specifications for it's installation.
I think that the one that I used was Owens Corning, Vent Sure.
