Help me pick: GAF 40 or Tamko 50

Here are my choices by roofer is giving me (comparable price point)

1. GAF Timberline 40
2. Tamko Heritage 50

Any professional advice and experience would be greatly appreciated.

Your comparing a 40 year shingle to a 50 year shingle.

Both of those manufacturers produce a 40 year & a 50 year, so you should be comparing a 40 too a 40 or a 50 too a 50 to compare prices.

Apparently, these two are comparable in price point. I have a budget that I’d like to stick to on materials. I hear good things about GAF/ELK and Tamko. I’m sure my roofer can get Certainteed but I heard to much negative stuff about them so I ruled them out. There’s way to many selections for the average Joe who knows nothing about shingles. I know I want a quality shingle that will last me 30 years. I'm tired of washing granulars out of gutter ever other year. I wish I had an unlimited budget, I’d go with the Tamko Lamarite (or equivalent) and never look back, but I don’t.

Depends on your location.....different plants produce different quality of shingles.

The Tamko will be better than the GAF/Elk, but the Certainteed Landmark 40 or 50 will be better than either of them. I would take a 30 year Landmark over a 40 year Timberline.

I install shingles every day.

So now I need to go look at Certainteed. Thanks for the heads up. Shoot, I was hoping I picked the right two companies to choose from. With all the past legal issues with Certainteed, I figured I didn't want to even look at them.

Certainteed got rid of 'most' their problem lines of shingles,
their Land Marks & Presidential Shakes series are for sure worthy of looking at.

My point to my first post,
Each manufacturer charges more money for their 50 year shingle than their 40 year shingle, so if your roofer is offering you 50 year Tamko at the same price as 40 year Gaf/Elk you should make sure he/she is not trying to sell you "what we call X-out" which are manufacturer rejects, because those materials are sold with no '-0-' warranty.
