Help attaching 2x12 rafters...

Hello,
My husband and I are building a 14' x 25' screened porch with irregular hip roof.

Could you tell us what Simpson hangers we could use to attach 2x12 rafters to the 2x12 ledger? For common rafters, we need slopeable hangers, but for the hip rafters we need both skewable and slopeable.

We worked with an engineer, who computed the length and size of rafters we need to use and changed them to 2x12 (from our much incorrect original drawing that showed 2x6 rafters). But he forgot to update the materials list and now we don't know how to attach them to the ledger, etc. Originally, we planned to use LSU26, LUS26Z, and H2.5A.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Go to a lumber yard, not a Lowes or HD and talk to them. Take your drawing with you.

They are made, even though I don't like to use them

You don't need them.
They would be very expensive if they did make them, which they probably don't.
They'd have to stock for every pitch?
You have excellent side nailing with hip rafters.
And you can use straight hangers for "commons"; just put an 1-1/2" deep notch the width of the saw blade at the proper elevation in the plumb cut of the rafter and slip it onto the bottom of and into the hanger.

I suggest you Google Simpson and download the catalog before you open your mouth.

Second, do it yourselfers like them as you don't need as perfect a fit.

For experienced carpenters they are not normally needed, but from the OP they had an engineer spect them So to answer their post, then let them know where to find or order them.

I would give your engineer a call. Both the LSU and the LSSU line of Simpson joist hangers are variable slope/variable skew. The differences between the various hangers is the allowable load and the joist width. For example, the LSU 26 is designed for 2x material, and according to the Simpson catalog can be sloped or skewed (or both) in the field up to 45 degrees either direction. The LSSU 28 and LSSU 210 are also both designed for 2x material, but have different load characteristics than the LSU 26. Only your engineer knows for sure which one is appropriate for your particular application.

simpson twist ties will work for the rafter at the bottom. just bring it up high enough to allow for the sheetrock.

Roofguy, not sure exactly which Simpson you are suggesting, possibly the LTS/MTS/HTS twist straps? These connectors are designed for a tension connection, not a shear connection. Before using such a tie, I would talk directly to Simpson to make sure they are recommended for the specific connection the OPS needs. The LSU series are designed for the specific function of connecting a rafter to a horizontal element, meaning they provide a shear connection.
