Hardboard siding

have a 1998 solitair mobile home that had some hail damage recently, and needs some of the siding and trim repaired. The insurance adjuster said it is hardboard, just wondering how you can tell the difference between that and hardiboard.
Also what's the best way to repaint it? can it be sanded first?

I believe he may be referring to Masonite siding----

Got some pictures?
I'd be shocked if it was Hardee Board, to expensive and brittle to use on a building that at one time had to roll down the road.
Hard board looks like ground up cardboard on the back side and just under the finish.(because it is)
Hardee is concrete looking.
