Gutters with built-up roof?

I'm looking at options for a re-roof on my house in Seattle that currently has a built-up roof with a low slope (I think it is 4/12) and internal downspouts (no gutters). I am tired of the problems I've had with this system and would like to have gutters on the next roof. Is this possible with a new built-up roof or do I need to go with something different like metal in order for that to work properly?

The built in gutters you have are part of the structure of your roof. When replacing the roof, you would need to take measures to eliminate the troughs.

You could use a product to overlay a new deck or fill in the built in gutters. Once this has been completed you can install gutters like any other structure.
