Gutter installation along eaves:

Hello,
I just had a new roof installed in January, and the installers made some creative decisions!

They managed to get the felt paper under the drip edge at the rakes of the roof, but at the eaves where the shingles overhang into the gutters they did a few things with the paper.
  1. Some installed correctly with paper overhanging the gutter but shorter than the shingles.
  2. Some paper was not cut properly and is longer than the shingles.
  3. Some gutters were screwed down ON TOP of the felt but under the shingle overhang.
In the places where the felt is over the gutter, it looks like the installer just cut the paper next to the rake drip guard and pushed the gutter under the paper.

When I contacted the roofer-salesman I was told that it didn't matter, couldn't be changed and/or both ways are correct. When I talked to the contractor he tried to tell me that they do all roofs the same way, even though my roof does not show that.

The directions for GAF ELK shingles specify that the paper goes under the rake drip edge and over the flashing at the eaves.

What are the risks of leaving the felt under the gutter if I can't get the installer to change this setup? (There is no drip edge flashing at the eaves- only the gutter lip to protect the fascia).

Felt and moisture guard should be under the drip edge on the gutterline and over the drip edge on the rakeline.Could you post some pix?

I will post some pics, but your response seems contrary to what I read on the GAF installation manual.

I have installed moisture guard past the fascia into the gutter back.I only did this upon the customers request.

I forget to include one important key IMO,I have always installed moisture guard and or felt under the drip edge on the gutterline. My reasoning for that is I have seen ice daming that has worked between the moisture guard and the drip edge.I rarely have this problem when installing the moisture guard under the drip edge on the gutterline then over the drip with the felt.I always cut my felt even with the roof deck or fascia but never past or too short. It depends alot with your climate with the effects of too short of felt.
