granular sand particles from the roof needs replacement??

i've just installed a rain barrel connected to my down spout. after a couple large storms, i've noticed quie a bit of white granular particles have collected near the filter and it's all coming from the roof. question is whether this is some thing i need to place? is this normal wear and tear? the roof was installed new about 5 yrs back.

thanks

Roof shingles shed the granules over the life of the shingles---no need to be concerned---

+1

It's typically a little bit faster on the front end and also faster on the backend when they're burning up.
