Geodesic Dome Needs New Roof

I own a geodesic dome in Northeast Ohio and I now need a new roof. Does anyone know a good contractor that can handle this? It's 48' diamater, and the entire surface is basically covered in shingles. It has 4 dormers, one skylight, and a flat roof on the front porch. The existing roof would probalby need to be torn off, and some of the underlying decking would need to be replaced (though most of the triangles are perfectly fine). 2 of the dormers need some repair.

I'm looking preferably for someone who has actual experience with geodesics, or at the least someone not afraid to tackle this project. It's actually very simple when you break it down, but I have had contractors get intimidated by it.

Hi!
Welcome to "DIY"!

You should probably, post some pictures.
We've dealt with a couple (geodesics) -
pictures would help!
Yeah - somewhat, intimidating!

Is this a "kit" home? Contact the manufacturer or builder for a roofer reference.

Thank you, both good suggestions. I will post some pictures. And yes, it was a "kit" built in 1987. I will contact the supplier for referrals.

While there are plenty of those things around the country they are still few and far between. I'm sure the maker has a small list of traveling-roofers that specialize in such things.

I like that!!!

Don't think I would want to shingle it. How many square of shingles does that monster take...any idea?

Thanks! Yeah, people really like it. I believe it's between 30-40 square.

They really eat shingles. The technique is called Dutch-Lapping on the transitions. ANd the exposure changes radically with each 'level' of shingles as you go around, not up the dome. If you don't change the exposures, the lines come out all wrong. That one would be a fun project.

Geodesic domes are really neat designs!

Tinner, that is quite the monster skylight on that house.

Eric, the Dome whole be a.50 foot 5/8 diameter dome without a rider wall, obviously. Oregon domes is the likely manufacturer and the problem is a multifaceted one first the hexagons shouldn't be cut individually. The seams do not overlap enough, telling me the underlap is virtually none and your leaks other than the top are where the dormers connect to the dome. Contact us and we will see what we can do to get it fixed. Dan
