Gable vent disaster

We recently had a crazy thunderstorm that created rain damage in my kitchen. The rain was coming in sideways to the point where it went straight into a gable vent and into the attic. It made a nice mess in our kitchen ( coming through a light in the kitchen of course ). :censored: And I know it's only a matter of time before the next "perfect storm" comes through. My question is are gable vents necessary, or can I install attic vents (like the solar powered ones) to do the job? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

A picture would help---and the approximate size of the roof.

A ridge vent might be a simple solution--someone here will be able to offer a solution if we know the pitch and size of the house.

Are there no louvers on the vent?

Pictures of the gable vent....

I can't make a picture small enough to post on here. check out http://s1138.photobucket.com/albums/n540/Navyguy79/ and you can see what I'm talking about. And no, there are no louvers.

Two suggestions----A modern aluminum vent should fix that---

The pitch of your roof makes installing a ridge vent a natural solution.

You will need a Skill saw---a stack of blades---and a hammer---

Remove the ridge cap shingles--cut open the ridge to the right width for the vent--and nail it in.

Some ridge vents allow you to nail cap shingles right on the vent----ask more questions---I'm no roofer.but I hire a few and have a bit of knowledge.

Make sure you install screening and then louvers. That will help keep both rain and birds/bugs out.
