"Frozen" Gutter Leak

I would be interested in seeing photos within one to two week after a large snow fall. It takes several days after a large snow fall for the thawing and freezing to create severe ice dams.
My Son is a fireman and I will ask him about the heat cables, I have not heard that.
I am sure there is always danger in any thing electrical that could cause a fire. Heat cables have been around for years...I would hate to pay for their liability claim if they prove to be defective.

I have attached a photo of my home and my neighbors three weeks after our last large snow fall. Yes I built a home that is acceptable to icing in Michigan. The ice cycle last week were four feet in spots. Stupid me but never again! No, I do not have a heated garage.

"Frozen" Gutter Leak

Michael, your method shown is absolutely a very good and workable idea, but the cost to remove an existing gutter and fir out the fascia boards and insert the vent filter becomes undesirable and therfor not chosen, while the Smart Vent is still within the price range of understandable affordability.

Here is that article about the Church fire below.

CHICAGO - An electrical problem might have sparked a blaze that tore holes in the roof of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, fire officials said Thursday.

Authorities have not determined the exact origin or cause of Wednesday's fire in the 134-year-old church, but Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight said officials had ruled out arson. He said they were focusing on a possible electrical malfunction in a system that keeps ice from building up on the edge of the cathedral's roof.

The flames severely damaged the attic of the Gothic revival-style church and left water damage in the sanctuary. Mass was held Thursday in an adjacent parish center, where dozens of parishioners used plastic and metal chairs for pews and kneeled on the concrete floor.

the metal you see behind the gutter in the pics is then sealed with Geocell 2300,and there hasn`t been a leak behind the flashing with 20 years using this system Grumpy,a DOUBLE FLASHING WOULD HAVE THE 2 METALS EXPANDING/CONTRACTING WITH EACH OTHER,buckling out, ruining the seam seals etc

"Frozen" Gutter Leak

Ed,

What keeps those vents open when there's a heavy snowfall which accumulates in the gutters and rises above the edge of the shingles?

Not saying it doesn't/can't work - I'd be delighted if it did, as this would save me a pile of money as a property owner and would be a real boon to my home inspection clients - just wondering how it works.

I kinda like the build out myself, because there`s no doubt it won`t leak, although I have used smart vent, and had no problems with it yet,for the expense of smart vent, you could just as easily use a holesaw thru existing fascia, put fascia blocks on fascia over the rafter tails, put a new fascia on top,and cap it with aluminum, with an opening at the bottom for breathing
