Very common sight on homes built in early 1900s NY would be a sky light/vent some operable by detachable handle to allow ventilation constructed of metal (aluminum) and thick wired glass for storm safety. I'm referring to something older here and possibly still in use in some NY homes to this day. Does anyone know where I may be able to purchase or have something like this made? Thanks for your help.

Are you sure it was aluminium? I would guess steel. Try Gamco in Flushing NY - maybe call and ask? I would guess the older ones are not good for keeping heat in during the winter being single-paned and all.
I've also read that operable sky lights are bad on flat roofs. I reeeeeeally want one for my stairwell, not only to let in light but also to vent on hot days. My stairwell (only 2 stories) is seriously the darkest place in our house.
