On the north side of my Chicago area home we get ice damns.
The roof is flat (2/12) and has no overhang.
What can I do to prevent or minimize ice damns?
If that is the most insulation that you are able to get in the space without blocking the venting then you may just have to get on the roof after a snow storm to brush the heavier snow off. With the pitch being so low the snow will just lay there and it will either melt from the sun or the heat coming up from the house.
You may be able to install the heated wire that will melt the snow and reduce the ice build-up.
Is this a Brownstone or a two flat, by any chance?
