flashing in valley. should it show?

I have a tile roof, single story. The flashing in the valley is under the tile roof. Should I be able to see the flashing? I thought there is a gap between the tiles in the valley so the water and debris drains correctly. The tiles butt up against each other so I cannot see any metal flashing.

The metal is there, under the tile, but I heard that the metal should be showing a bit in the valley so the water and debris can drain propertly. I went up there and had to clean out under the tile since there was a lot of dirt caking up. The neighbor had a problem with leaks in his house, and I think it was due to the debris in the valley.

The paper underneath the tile is suppose to be waterproof, but over time I think it wears out.

I like for it to show as a wide 'open' valley. Then, it self-cleans, and if it doesn't, you know it needs cleaning an dcan do something about it.
Since it's closed, the ony cure is to hire somebody to redo it for you.

So it sounds like builders sometimes show the flash valley, and sometimes do not. In the neighborhood I live, I looked at a few homes and noticed that it doesn't show. The house behind me is another builder, and it doesn't show.

I would assume that its a trend is to hide the flash in the valley since it might not look as nice if it shows. But this causes water problems for the roof, and after 10 or 15 years, the paper under the roof will start to wear out due to excess water flowing outside the flash area, due to debris. This happened to several homes in the neighborhood.

So one solution is to clean the flash in the valley every few years or so.

Yes, lately it's all about appearences. Make it look better, even if it hurts function.
To get both, it would be done like this if slate was the material being used. A bit harder to do with tile.
