in fight with roofer over gravel roof work, am i wrong?

Had a contract to :
Spud back approx 36" around gravel ground. Primer roof using asphalt primer. Hot mop 2 fiber glasspiles using type 3 asphalt. Inbed existing gravel.

we had asked for the perimeter of the roof to be done. this looked like that is what we had agreed on. we honestly want to do what is right, but the roofing company has been rude and abusive and we cant seem to resolve this.

Questions:
does gravel guard go all the way around the perimeter?
what does spud back mean?
any advice?

Yes

what does spud back mean?
Take a 'bumper' to dislodge the existing gravel from the asplhalt.

(Then-
Sweep the area clean. Mop asphalt and set new plies in the asphalt. Pour more asphalt, re-embed the old gravel in the new asphalt.)

any advice?[/quote]

About what? What is the issue? You didn't clarify an issue, to my understanding.

1. Gravel Stop sheet metal usually goes along all of the perimeter edges, especially if the edge is the same height or elevation as the roof materials. It may possibly not go on, if the edges are raised or cantilevered slightly. In that instance, either the composition base flashing material or more of a coping cap sheet metal product would be installed. It would be much better to have the gravel stop sheet metal though.

2. Spudding back the gravel would be using a long steel handled tool, which has a rigid flat knife like blade bolted to the bottom of the tool, so that a roofing mechanic could gently push and scrape the embedded gravel out of the existing asphalt embeddment. If the roofing mechanic is careless, more harm can be done than had existed prior to the attempted repair.

3. What advice are you actually seeking. Maybe a session with Dr. Phil would be in order to bring harmony back into the contractual relationship.
