Elastomeric coatings on aluminium coating

Hi,
I have a flat roof with existing aluminium coating which is wearing off from different places. There is also some water ponding on some places on the roof. I was wondering if there is any coating which will also be water proof? Will something like elastomeric coating sold in Home Depot/Lowe's work on aluminium coating?

Also is there any prep work I can do to make sure new coating sticks to the roof surface.

Thanks,
Arun

Please do not be confused into thinking a coating is a roof. It is not, but there are those that will tell you it is.

If your roof is in good shape, that is, if the asphalt has not oxydized, (If it is not dried out or does not resemble a dried out river bed) you can pressure wash the roof to remove scale and atmospheric dirt. blow it dry with a leaf blower and let it air dry completely. Then apply a cut back solution of D-41 Asphalt primer, cut with mineral spirits, and let it flash off (dry) completely, then apply two coats of a good fibered aluminum coating like Karnak AF-97 with a 3/4 inch nap roller. Mix coating continuously to keep aluminum flake suspended.

Good Luck.

Elastomeric coatings on aluminium coating

Do what Jagans suggested, we just had a topic come up like this last week.

Also the stuff you buy at box stores is not always and usually isn't the same as what you can buy from a supply house.

Don't be shy, go to a supply house and buy the real stuff. Karnak and a few others make great alumacoatings. The supply house well most will sell to you.

Is it going to be more expensive, Yes. Will it last longer (a lot longer if you take the advise of Jagans) Yes it will.

A lot of the coating failures that happen are because the prep work was not done correctly.

The surface needs to be clean and dry. Pressure wash, stiff bristle broom, and let dry. Prime let dry, coat let dry and coat again.
