Drip edge overlap

What is the recommended overlap of shingles over the drip edge? I was told 1/4" past the drip edge was fine, but have heard otherwise since. The drip edge is 1" past the roof sheathing so shouldn't this, on it's own, provide for proper run-off? Also, does a roof's pitch make a difference? Thanks.

Drip cap is to protect the ends of the plywood not the top of the sheathing.
Read the bag of shingles, most say 3/8 over hang.

Drip edge overlap

1/4" is the norm for me.It really depends on location. We do 1" off the rake and 1-1/2" in the gutters w/o drip in STL but in Springfield and Joplin its 1/4"-1" in the gutters and also 1/4"-1" off the rake with drip.

But funny thing is in my 417 area code drip edge is a standard part of the roof installation which is figured in but in STL 636 and 314 its an option above the estimate.
