Downspouts draining to lower roof

What do you usually see on how the drainage is set up from upper to lower roof?

Here's an interesting article I came across:

http://www.buellinspections.com/gutt...nd-downspouts/

Anyone seen a metal tray for the downspout that drains to lower roof (the last photo on page)? A comment (at bottom) on that page mentions such a tray is custom made by a gutter installation contractor, and is actually secured on the roof as well (comment describes specifics).

I would rather see the downspout on the roof than the tray.

So it's better/safer to have the downspout water potentially prematurely wear out the shingles there from extra water run-off than to have such a tray over them in the case of not extending downspout to the lower gutter?

Can you clarify the reasoning?

The extra water will wear the shingles and most times they send the water sideways at the shingle and force it under the shingle.

As long as they are draining down the surface, they are okay but not ideal.

And what would putting a tray over the shingles do? The tray is supposed to be top anchored to roof covered by a layer of shingles over the mount section, just like roof vent/pipe flashings with the bottom folding or anchored to the edge of roof or something like that.
