Does this style roof need gutters?

I am looking into purchasing this house. I am not familiar at all with this roof style and would love some experienced opinions. The overhang is quite sizable but the land around is fairly level and there is evidence of the water splashing up on the concrete foundation in front.

I have seen other houses this style without gutters so wasnt sure if this was the norm or a potential problem. The house is in a beach community so not sure if that means anything (coincidentally so is the other houses I have seen like this).

Just wondering if I would bring it up to the seller as a negotiating point or will I look like I dont know what I'm talking about! Thank you all!

The roof doesn't care if you have gutters or not, for the most part. The gutters are there to protect your grounds around the house as well as your foundation. As well as protecting the people entering in your door in a rain from taking a shower.

Without a doubt, if I owned that house I would be installing gutters. remember when I said the roof doesn't care? Well that front dormer is one time when it will. What will happen without a way of controlling water run off, from the dormer, it'll wear out the shingles below. Therefore a gutter should be installed with a downspout and a downspout extension to bring the water from the upper gutter durectly into the lower gutter and never coming in contact with the roof. It'll look ugly, the other other choice is a beat up roof which'll fail early.

Thanks for the quick response! I would definitely feel more comfortable with gutters on myself.

Plus you can be "green" and install yourself a rain barrel.

Just an update; I checked it out last night and the overhang wasnt for soffit venting (which i thought was the point), it was just thin wood right to the roofing material.

Place already had an offer so time to move on!
