Did my roofer install I&W as per code?
 
Does the first 3' of underlayment in the pic look like I&W shield? The roof was done in 2009 and 3' minimum of I&W was code at the time.

I went with the lowest bidder which and have been paying for it ever since and I am not sure he did the right thing. I just spent $850 repairing all the flashing that they did wrong. They wanted to caulk it - so much for the "Warranty".

I had a high end slate/cedar shake and copper guy come in and he said it was all done wrong. He said anyone can lay shingles, flashing is what takes skill.

Code would be 2' minimim inside the the outer wall. On that roof, it might take 2 more courses of I&W to meet the minimum requirement.

I was told at the time in NJ it was just 3' from the edge. But does the stuff they put up look like I&W at all?

Yes it is I&W. You can tell by the black line at the top. Also, if you look at the roll on the cleat, you can see the white backing paper. Did you shingle that lower pitched roof on the right?

It's I&W.

"I was told at the time in NJ it was just 3' from the edge." It's about protecting the inside of the living space. You were told wrong.

And if OSHA sees that crew without the required fall gear, the job will come to a screehing halt.

2003 International Residential Code:

R905.2.7.1 Ice Protection. In areas where the average daily temperature in January is 25deg F (-4 deg. C) or less or when Table R301.2(1) criteria so designates, an ice barrier that consists of at least two layers of underlayment cemented together or of a self-adhering polymer modified bitumen sheet, shall be used in lieu of normal underlayment and extend from the eave's edge to a point at least 24 inches (610 mm) inside the exterior wall line of the building.

I figured as much, everything this guy said was BS I have found out.

They had 8 guys on the roof, no fall gear on any of them. One day 8 hour job for 22 squares of GAF. With 3 layers to tear off all for $6400 including all new gutters. I had them come back three times to cleanup siding that they damaged.

The next guy wanted 9k and the other 11k. I wish I had done the 9k now :(

Ha, that's what you get.

Just did a 22 square 4-12 pitch, one layer for that price. We took two days, but don't use cheap labor for our installs. Also take a little pride in our trade.

You get what you pay for.

Both of you got what was coming to you. That guy is probably only making wages if he's lucky.

What if the 9k or even the 11k guy/gal did the exact same thing?
It's not the price that determines quality, trust me.

If you haven't already gotten a workmanship guarantee in writing I would suggest contacting them and doing so and keep it on file.
Keep the pictures, all paper work and proof of payment on file also.
Being short on the I&W don't mean there will be problems, but it's possible.

They have a 5 year workmanship warranty.

When I called the owner to let him know I had 4 leaks during hurricane Irene - first he said "everybody's roof is leaking during this storm" and "don't worry we will come and caulk the flashing".

After doing some research and just using common sense I realized caulk was not the fix. The roofers had simply caulked the flashing to the sides of the chimney and only used small pieces of step flashing on the dormer which resides in the valley.

$850 later and I have soldered copper step and counter flashing on the chimney with the CF imbedded in the mortar and a nice saddle installed in the valley at the dormer.

Look at this dormer, it was bound to leak in that valley!

I would like to have it removed but it is so tied into the 1910 structure I am afraid to. We are planning a large addition in the coming years and the whole roof will be redone at that time to tie into the new structure.

I didn't realize you had already went through issues, I thought you were just questioning certain methods.

BTW, I would not post the roofers name or company information.
If they lose work and come to find it was because of you posting their information here they could file a law suit against you.

Good point, Thanks - I removed it.

Yes this roof was completed 9/30/2009 and according to the guy that just repaired my flashing it looked to be leaking for about 2 years in the valley :furious:

The chimney started leaking 3/2011 once the caulk securing the flashing to the chimney started failing. Plus a static roof vent leaked and my attic furnace b-vent.
