dark streaks on shingles
Is there an easy way to remove the dark streaks on my 10 year old shingles. A friend of mine suggested putting zinc or something gallvenized across the peak and the rain will eventually wash it off. Anyone ever try this and does it work?

Is this on the side that gets the least amount of sun?

I have tall trees and a 28'-high A-frame with 1991 40-year architectural shingles. Our roof is dark gray, and years ago developed the black algae streaks.
I installed a test of zinc strips (made for the purpose) on a side porch roof, and I have not seen any difference. I even had one neighbor have his roof pressure-washed to temporarily get rid of the black algae, but who knows how much he shortened his roof life with that stunt.
There supposedly are algae-killing chemicals that you can spray-pump on, but they will also kill plants around the base of the house.
I have decided to just live with it, after exploring all of the alternatives which are just temporary anyway. You can clean it off, but it will come right back.

yes, its on the north side of the roof. But my house is in the middle of an open field. Wouldn't you think it would stay dry enough to prevent algae growth. Seems like I see more of this now, (roofs with streaks) than in the past. Might have something to do with the way the shingles are made.

MIke, How long have the stripes been installed?
