chimney leak

I had a new roof put on 10 years ago and the contractor just tarred around the outside of the chimney. I think there is flashing under the shingles but just tar at the bottom of the chimney. The tar is now peeling away from the chimney so there is a gap between the chimney and the shingles.

Can I just re-tar the gap? If not does anybody know the right way to fix this problem?

Tar’s just a band aid.

This should give you an idea of what needs to be done.

Roofing Cement without any fabric reinforcement wil Always crack. Usually, whichever surface that is more pliable that it is ttached to will be stuck sufficiently enough to the hardened plastic roofing cement so that the expansion and contraction of the roofing cement will also start to tear that product, which in your case would be the roofing shingles.

This has a strong probability of creating a large enough tear through the shingles to eventually allow water to enter.

It "May" not happen that way for some time, but it "Probably" eventually will.

The tar and affected shigles will need to be neatly removed and cleaned up completely with new shingles installed for the pieces that were removed and then all new base, step, apron, counter and rear pan flashings will need to be fabricated and installed.
