certainteed shingles warranty period

I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the warranty period is on my Certainteed shingles. The only info I have is that they are 240# sealdon. Is the warranty period 20, 25 or 30 years? How can I tell? I have one of the leftover shingles from the original roofing job in 1991.

It is very possible that your Certainteed shingle was part of a class action lawsuit.From 1987-2005 organic shingles were the issue.


A bit more information about your shingle is needed.

Do you have a contract from the reroof in 1991 that tells the brand name of your shingle installed.



In December 2009, CertainTeed Corporation and representatives of owners of buildings on which certain CertainTeed Organic Shingles had been installed reached an agreement concerning a class action settlement.

CertainTeed no longer manufactures these shingles; all shingles it has sold after 2005 are fiberglass shingles and are not at issue in this suit. On September 1, 2010, the District Court approved the settlement, which is intended to resolve disputes between the parties about the performance of the shingles. This class action settlement covers the entire United States and Canada.

The shingles were put one the house when it was built and the only info on the contract is 240# sealdon shingles. I am trying to figure out what Certainteed will pay me under the class action suit but I need to know the warranty period. It might not be worth it to apply for the money if they are only 20 year warranty shingles.

Architectural in that ara were typically 25yr and up.


Certainteed did manufacture a 30yr 3 tab.(XT)


Your roof will have to show failure to have any chance with any replacement possibility.IMO something is better than nothing.


During that time over 94% of CertainTeed Organic Shingles were sold in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Therefore, if you live in the U.S. but do not live in one of those states, it is less likely that your shingles are the ones addressed in this lawsuit.

If your shingles are the 240# Sealdon, they only had a 15 year warranty, not a 20 year. It was a builder grade shingle that they continued making when the glas mat shingles came on the market. Prior to that, the 235 and 240# shingles were a 15 year warranty roof. ONLY glas mat shingles had the longer warranty.
Even if you have the glas mat shingles, the warranty is prorated meaning you have almost nothing to get from a warranty claim. Might research the class action suit but I believe you're too late to get in on it.

I'm not able to post pictures of the shingles but we had a roofer look at them and he said they were 25 year shingles. Today I mailed the damaged shingle from the roof and the claim form to Certainteed. You would not believe the hoops they make you jump through when you file this claim. Our roof used 42 squares so we shall see what they offer to pay us, if anything. Many of the shingles had no gravel left on them and were curling and falling off. Amazingly, we never had a roof leak.

Certainteed never had a 15 year shingle that I have ever seen. They had a 25 year and 30 year 3 tab shingle. The 240# were 25 year. It will not matter if you know what year they are. When you send them in, they test them and they know what they are and how old they are.

With a class action suit, once the money is gone, it's gone. Most claims we have submitted get very little money for repair. The worst part was that they went through with the class action suit. The only ones who make out well is the law firms involved.

I didn't know about the possibility of the money running out. I'll post here if and when I get any response from Certainteed.

Just wanted to let you know that we sent in our claim on these shingles the beginning of September and the other day we received a check in the mail for over $900. Our roof had the 25 year shingles and the whole roof, about 40 squares, failed. I sent lots of pictures and a shingle sample. It's not as much as I would have hoped but it's better than nothing. By the way, we have a new roof of GAF shingles, which I hope last longer than we live here.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't put too much money on the new GAF lasting as long as they say.

Well there is a reason why they are the latest manufacturer dealing with lawsuits. There shingles are terrible. Last I was told they are going to get them under 200lbs a square. There already is nothing to them.

No. Not anymore. Until a few months ago I used to but there quality has decreased to the point that I no longer feel comfortable installing them on customers homes.
