Cedar Shake Roof

Hi all,
I'm new and had a few questions. I am considering building a new home in a subdivision. Covenants require a cedar shake roof. Where could I find out some information on required maintenance and cost estimates(ball park, not exact)? I am in the far north suburbs of chicago. I did a couple searches on the forums here and there were only a few threads.

Thanks in advance.

Don't have an exact figure on roof size, but, the square footage of each floor is about 1435. The roof has an 8/12 pitch. This is a non-hip roof.
Can't have arhitectural shingles only cedar.
But, I would like to find out more information on the maintenance and costs associated, etc. I have a feeling after driving through a few neighborhoods in my area and seeing some fairly new(under 10 years old) homes with shake roofs getting substantial repairs there are definitely good and bad materials and install crews.

yep grumpy is your man. He handles the n suburbs and is extremely qualified. You do know cedar shingles are big money. example regular roof 4,000 dollars cedar shingles i would guess somewhere between 12,000 and 20,000. Oh the north suburbs of chicago i'm thinking Lake forest or glencoe or wilmette. Pm grumpy here.

747,
I'm not in that high of rent area. Northernmost Edge of McHenry county. I work in the lake forest area, it's a very expensive area. You know it's high rent when you see a McDonalds with Cedar shake roof.

I think that cedar is 3 to 4 times more per square (l+m) compared to regular shingles.
