Caulk vs. embedding flashing in mortar

Everywhere I read it says to embed the cap flashing in the mortar. Our roofing guys want to just caulk it to the chimney, saying that putting grooves in the mortar will weaken it. I would think that, if done by someone who knows what they are doing the embedding way would be the best. Any thoughts?

You picked a bad roofer. Was he the cheapest?

The only way cutting into the chimney would weaken it is if the cut were to deep or to close to the outside corners.
Caulking alone is not a proper method to install counter flashing's.
Face nailing the flashing and the use of caulking is acceptable.

The cutting into the brick method dumbafies the method so it is less likely to be a problem.

Just to throw this out there.
Step-flashing fastened to the chimney -
Mortar cuts -
Counter-flashing, "pop riveted " to the step-flashing -
(Seen this)
Sealed with the appropriate sealant.
Seems to work!?
Mortar it? - depends on the condition of the brick - depends on the thickness of the mortar
joints - depends on the mortar... etc.

No - nobody told me that -
I've been up on roofs; and that's what I've seen - numerous times.
Just wondering if it "flies or dies"?
I don't know who roofed it, and no one told me.
OK?
