care of older standing seam metal roof

We live in an old house (c 1860's) with a not quite that old standing seam metal roof (c 1940's if the locals can be believed) What regular maintenance is recomended? It has been coated with a black substance (I was told it was recoated every few years - but not what the substance was) Long story shorter - we need to recoat the roof to extend its life, new roof not financially possible right now. What are the recommendations for a product to seal, waterproof, etc. (Don't really want to go with a white elastomeric coating since the house is white...)

Figure out what the black substance is and keep using the same thing if its otherwise been working.

It appears to be a sealant of some type, definitely not paint. I'll wait on tinner66...

What color do you want the roof to remain? i.e. is it black currently and you want to keep it that color?

You are married to using a compatible type sealant now that the base material is no there, however, there are better choices regardless.

Currently the roof is the black of whatever was put on the standing seam. I don't want white (the house is white) but if there is another choice besides the black (holds too much heat) I would prefer that. Just not white.

They make some pretty well regarded coatings in the grey family of colors.

Try to figure out what was used and what the chemical compatibilities are.
