Can an 18 year old cedar shake roof be restored?

Around these parts a cedar shake roof is going to be more expensive if it's done right. It's easier to do asphalt correct as compared to Cedar.

Can an 18 year old cedar shake roof be restored?

when I was a small child back in the 60's I often ran across houses built in the 1930 in the ritzy side of town that had a second layer of wood shingles over the original shingles ,that were 20 years old ,
and were having no problems
the Cedar Shingle Bureau guidelines had no problem with the practice at the time
wish I had taken a picture of of them
