Butterfly Roof Gutters

The ice build-up on the downspout of our butterfly roof gutter has pulled the guttering off our house. When ice in the valley of our butterfly roof melted it ran under the soffit and dripped inside the house - no matter how much we tried to calk or seal the roof. So, we put a coil-heater on the roof valley to keep ice from forming. Water then ran into the gutter and the leaking the house stopped! The temperature this winder has been so cold that the heated ice water freezes solid in the downspout. With the downspout clogged, the water ran over the top of the gutter forming an enormous ice cycle so heavy it pulled all the guttering down. Should we remove the guttering and let the run-off just hit the patio like a waterfall, or is there a better way to use a gutting system?

Did you also add deicing cable inside the gutters and down spouts?

Made any changes in the attic to prevent the ice in the first place?
Air sealing, adding insulation, making sure there the correct amount of venting?
Added heat tapes inside the gutters and down spouts?

In retrospect, when the heat cable is run through a hole you should have drilled in the gutter with a drip loop return, the water drips to the ground and freezes where the ice can be dealt with rather than filling the gutter.
