Boarded over soffit vents

I visited my brother-in-law this past weekend. This was the first time we saw the house they bought 5 years or mor ago. The first thing I noticed was that the soffit vents were completely boarded over by the prior homeowner. I guess there was a problem with squirrels. The roof has a ridge vent and a fairly small gable vent on each end, slightly larger tan the other. My initial reaction was to tell them that this was not adaquate and that they should consider a power gable vent or reopening the soffit vents after consulting with a pro of course.

Further inspection of the attic revealed no evedence of problems. The soffit vent spacers are still there although leading to blocked vents. The attic floor is well insulated with a thick layer of loose OCF Pink. There is no evidence of moisture or mold problems. The shingles are at least 5-10 years old and show none of the telltale signs of cooking in the heat- no curled edges- generally in good shape. My brother-in-law lives in Massachussetts.

So, after causing them initial concerne, I told them in my non-expert opinion that it doesn't look as bad as it originally appeared but that they may still want to look at more ventilation. I know pictures speak volumes but I don't have any. I'm thinking at this point that if it ain't broke don't try to fix it and they should just leave it as is but I'm open to other opinions.

How big are the gable vents? I like gable vents over can or ridge vents cuz a slight breeze can turn the air in the attic over quite quickly. You gotta have sufficient gable venting, though.

Boarded over soffit vents

My house (Cape) did not have any soffit vents either when I moved in
Roof is approx 10-15 years old now & in great shape
"2nd floor" was finished without any vent between insulation & roof deck
Gable vents did very little, no ridge vent

I'm adding soffit vents, added a ridge vent
Is the roof shaded ? That can make a big difference

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking either just leave it alone or monitoring the summertime temp.

Scuba... We recently introduced a new product for introducing adequate intake ventilation on tough-to-vent properties. It's called Cobra FasciaFlow intake vent. It combines the form of a fascia board with the function of an intake vent. For more information, if you're interested, please visit http://www.gaf.com/Roofing/Residenti...aFlow-Vent.asp

Thanks and best of luck with your project!
