Bad Domer by Roofing Company

This is the way our roofers did this dormer. It was not this way before and did not leak. We have researched dormers and have not seen anything like this.

Our roofer is telling us there is nothing else to be done and that this is the only way to do this dormer. We are looking for advice on how to deal with this problem and where we can find examples and plans for roofing dormers like this.

There's no excuse for "workmanship"like that.I would make them re-do that area, looks to me the cuts are too tight and flashings aren't secured properly.Does look hideous as you know already I'm sure.Keep phoning them over and over until they resolve this issue, although you may be better off getting someone else to do this...as this is how"they do it"

It looks like they used a flexible sheet membrane, such as the Tan version of Duro-Last as the window sill flashing.

I did that once also, but it definitely came out looking better when we did it.

The excessive shingle overhang over the window pan sill is relatively easy to trim and so are the shingles that are butted too tightly to the wall.

The lifting of the shingles is due to the sheet metal not being bent to the correct angle of the roof slope and how they attached it to the wall.

It may still wind up being a Pig when rectified, but at least it wil be wearing perfume.

What was the price of the job? Workmanship like that, I believe you went with the lowest bid.
I would of pulled all corner boards off and removed the storm panel, pulled window if needed and pan flashed the complete window well (sides apron) with copper and soldered all joints. the sides should of been step flashed also. the job would of been priced accordingly.

Deretta, I apologize if you miss understood what i was meaning to say.
From the pictures that you have posted, I would of come to the conclusion that the finished product would reflect that the price was cheep! not you . I can't understand why a reputable company would leave something like that, In my opinion, they don't have the knowledge or experience to tackle this type of window flashing.
please except my apologies we are here to help, not condemn. BOB

Just because someone charges high end prices does not mean that they wil be doing high end workmanship.

Thays why it is imperative to check out "Multiple" previous job references and have a very detailed written contract.

Also, most contractors subcontract out the actual work once they sign the job, which then means that you need to check out the subcontractor licensing and insurance and previous committment to quality installations.

How many past jobs that this company did similar to yours, did you go and check out and talk to home owners who used them in the past?

While a cheap price may indicate that they arew skimping on valuable specifications, it may also indicate that the company is a new start up without much overhead, which is a double edged sword. Cheaper overhead means lower prices, but also means a higher potential of them not being around to service the roof properly and possibly not enough cash flow to obtain additional training, since they think they know it all already. It also may spell doom for them to remain in business.
