We have a gambrel roof (front only) with 5 dormers in front. We usually don't get much snow bit got 4' last year that caused significant ice damming (over $32K in damage). This summer we had it airsealed and closed cell foam insulation put in plus additional over top of that. They closed off the soffit vents.
We need a new roof before winter sets in. We are putting in a ridge vent and a vent on the back edge (either "the edge" by air vent or "smartvent" by dci) The roofers came up with three options, all of which have the back edge vented:
1. skip the front altogether
2. Smart vent in front about 1' from where dormer meets the roof (slot would be about 4' from where the pitch changes).
3. smart vent at the pitch transition, skipping the dormer areas
They are using winterguard and would do it up past the slot in option 2. Does anyone have an opinion on this? The cost difference between them is $1-2K but my main concern is to prevent any damming in the future.
