Yes they are one and the same. They are called fiberglass because these asphalt shingles have a fiberglass mat. The fiberglass mat has proven to be more durable than the older organic mat shingles. The more popular brands such as Certainteed have fiberglass mats.

Nearly all shingles are made with an asphalt composition, with the exception of the ones made of modified bitumen.

Organic shingles have a center reinforcement core composed of an organic asphalt saturated material. Sometimes these are erroneously called asphalt shingles.

Fiberglass shingles contain a fiberglass reinforcement core which provides superior reinforcement strength, as long as it is a higher weight quality shingle.

Nearly all of the higher end shingles, called architectural shingles are composed of the fiberglass reinforcement core, if that tells you what the manufacturers think.
