Ashphalt roofing - semi attached house

Hello, I am working on replacing the roofing on the porch. Its a semi deattached house. I am going to rip off all the old layers and put on a membrane then ashphalt shingles. I would like to ask what is the best thing to do with the next door neighbour's aphalt shingles. I already got 2 layers on, the neighbours shingles are higher so I am going to assume they have 3 layers on at least.

When I rip off all my old asphalt roof I am thinking of slipping my membrane and asphalt shingles underneath his layer instead of layering ontop of his.

Lastly, this may be a noob question, but which side is the top and which side is the bottom ? I have a couple rolls of different membranes but can't really figure out which side is which. Does it really matter ?
