architectural vs. 3-tab shingles

Contractors are telling me to go with the architectural shingles. Have these shingles been around long enough for the test of time? I prefer to use the 3-tab because they would match my large garage roof that was done 4 years ago. I would use the architectural if I was convinced that it is worth it.

Re: architectural vs. 3-tab shingles

Unless you just fixing to sell no way would I use 3 tabs shingles!!.
Architecturals will last far longer, look better, far less likely to blow off, far easier to install.

Re: architectural vs. 3-tab shingles

They have certainly been around long enough to pass the time test. Whether they are worth it depends on the price difference the contractor charges.
As a DIY guy I would certainly buy them myself because the price difference from 3 tabs at the shingle store makes it worth it. But in order to say that to you depends on the contractors mark up.

While they are certainly easier to install that is only relevant to the installer. If you are paying somebody else to do the job ease of installation doesn't matter in your living room.

They will last longer but in my opinion how much longer depends on products.

They are certainly less prone to blow off but depending on your particular house, its location, topography, trees, buildings etc, blow offs may hardly be relevant. For instance I would trust a 3 tab on my house more than an architectural on my pal's house on top of that hill out in farm country. I have a low ranch in a neighborhood surrounded by trees and we rarely get wind gusts that matter. He gets them alot because he is on top of a hill, very few trees or anything to break the wind for a couple miles and his house is two stories.

If you want to match your garage I do not think that is an outlandish plan depending on what kind of 3 tabs are on the garage. For instance I wouldn't hesitate to put a CertainTeed XT30Ir on my house at the right price.
Don't look at me. I didn't vote for either one of them.
