Any problems using 1" nails

What have I done

i have my ranch style hip roof stripped and ready for shingles. I will be nailing the certainteed landmark shingles with a bostitch air nailer. I was given a box of nails to use. I just realized they are only 1" I know I should use 1 1/4" but is there any problem using the 1"

it's a single story ranch 4.5/12 pitch hip roof

I plan on doing 5 nails per shingle

As long as they go through the sheeting it don't matter.
When hand nailing I always used 1.25" nails cause the 1" nails were too short for my fat fingies!

Does your area require a permit to install shingles, not sure then you had better check before you get into it, the inspector shows up and your stuck having to stop in the middle of it.
There not going to allow 1" nails.

Forget trying to pursue a shingle warranty claim for blow offs and anything fastener related with Certainteed or any other shingle manufacture of lifetime & limited lifetime shingles.

The 1" nail will not conform with manufacture specifications.The only way you can use a shorter fastener and still maintain a full manufacture warranty is if the shorter fastener is used on open soffit and overhangs only.All the field shingles must have at least an 1/4" to comply with spec.

That is to prevent the fastener to splinter the under side of the decking (Mainly plywood) and showing the nail point.

Even if you use 6 nails per shingle that only means you now have 6 fasteners with the improper length.Sounds like you have a mess on your hands if you use the 1" nails.Best to take them back and buy the proper fasteners.

good replies and links--thanks guys. No inspection is required- but I am not going to use the 1" they were free so i am not out anything

I'll pass them on to someone else that is building a shed or dog house.

In any event, use a clothespin to hold the nails and save your fingers!

I think there is a reason you don't see the finger smashers too much anymore.

I needed to edit the post because I obviously can't read.....I thought you were keeping the little fellas.

GOod idea getting the proper sized coils.

Well shows what I know, Yep need 1.25" nails minimum. You can teach an old dog new tricks.

Either should work if the hole for the clothesline is small enough to grip the nail. You just use it to start the nail in, so in theory one clothespin should last. But, all of those "misses" which would bruise your finger end up destroying clothespins, so in my case at least I need a new about every fifty nails!

He's using an air nailer, no need to hold the nails.
When I need to hold the nails I use my needle nose pliers.

Never really thought about it.I smash my fingers several times a week and just accept it as collateral damage.
