Amount of nails for asphalt roof?

Doing a quote for my future DIY re-roof and have a rookie question...

How many nails do I need for a 12square roof installing dimensional asphalt shingles. I know how many per shingle and how to, but I look up online for a qty/price and they are listed by the pound. So...

How many lbs. per sq. is typical?

I box of 1 1/4" gun nails will do roughly 20 squares of shingles.
If hand nailing, 15 too 20 pounds, that's assuming 4 nails per shingle and 4 nails per ridge cap.

To add to what Sly said.,.,it also depends on your pitch.

If you are nailing super steep or mansard it is different than a walker.

Hand nailing, 6:12, 12 square.

I'll buy the 31lb box ($34) and have the extra for my workshop and future odd-jobs. They are handy nails to have around...
