Am I asking for future problems with this project?

I am on the North/South Carolina Border and it gets pretty hot here.

I have converted an old screened in porch to an open air patio and am adding tongue and groove panels to the ceiling.

My concern is that the extreme hot air will get trapped between the roof and the ceiling and possibly warp the ceiling or worse.

Can anyone provide a solution for this?

Should I use some sort of venting or insulation or both?

Thanks in advance.

Should I use foil sheathed foam panels (with the shiny side facing upwards) as an option?
I have searched the boards here and elsewhere and cannot seem to find an answer. Would like to resume the project but am fearfull that once I finish attaching the T&G it will be too late.

Are you enclosing the porch or just finishing the ceiling? If you are not enclosing/heating it, insulation won't do any good and venting probably won't be necessary as you won't have any appreciative temperature differential between the top and the bottom of the deck. Warpage occurs when you have varying temperature and humidity differences between the two sides of the deck. I think you will be fine.

I like the look of it in the pictures.

It depends on how your patio roof was built. You can probably add ridge vents, but make sure you have intake also.

It won't hurt and may help. I have seen cases of porch roofs in direct sun radiating heat through the ceiling consequently decreasing the porch's comfort level. As mentioned above, venting the roof would also help.

What's the roof surface?

And by the way: nice looking job.

Please excuse my ignorance....I am a truly a dedicated DIYer.

But.....would I be okay if I simply addded a vent on the lower edge of the 18 foot shed roof or do I have to add a return on the side attached to the house. If so, would that house side vent be vented down into the patio area or up through the shingles(I hope not).
