Aluminum siding compatibility

I've been lurking here for a while now, getting lots of great advice on a myriad of home projects. I finally decided to sign up so that I could ask my own questions, so here goes!
I've seen the topic of aluminum siding repair here and other sites and I get the concept of how to splice new pieces into old. What I don't know is how compatible are different brands of siding? In other words, my house has smooth, 8" siding. If I were to buy some 8" (smooth) siding from somewhere, is it going to fit into what I already have well enough for patch work, or does it have to be the same brand?

Thanks, in advance for your replies.

Probably not. The profile will most likely be different or different enough that they won't fit and lock together properly.

Aluminum siding compatibility

I've had to do this a few times. All siding of this nature works very much the same way (interlocking channels) and it's been my experience that different brands will work with some playing and adjusting. The locking channels systems are not exactly the same but they all work the same basic way. It doesn't come out perfect, but as long as the siding is the same overall width then it should be manageable.

+1

You can usually massage them a bit if they locks and profiles are close. After that, you are swimming up stream.

At least the depth of the bottom lip on my existing siding is the same 1/2" that new stuff all seems to have.
